William Gates LeDuc was the grandson of a French military officer who fought with George Washington at the
Battle of Yorktown. He played an important role in Minnesota’s transition from territory to statehood. His home
in Hastings still stands as a testimonial to his life & legacy. Steve Werle who has published a book on LeDuc
will give a presentation about the heritage of this Minnesota Pioneer.
Steve Werle is the author of “An American Gothic: The Life & Times & Legacy of
William Gates LeDuc.” Steve Werle was born and raised in Rochester, Minnesota and
teaches Advanced Placement United States History in the Twin Cities. He has taught a
variety of high school history courses for twenty-five years and also serves as a varsity
tennis coach.
